This route requires both motivation to process carefully and ability to understand arguments. Central route persuasion produces lasting attitude change resistant to counter-persuasion because attitudes rest on strong cognitive foundations.

The peripheral route involves superficial processing relying on simple cues rather than argument quality. Recipients respond to surface characteristics: attractive sources, catchy music, celebrity endorsements, message length rather than strength. This route operates when motivation or ability to process carefully is low. Peripheral persuasion produces quick but temporary attitude change easily reversed by counter-persuasion because attitudes lack strong foundations.

Multiple factors determine persuasion effectiveness. Source characteristics matter enormously. Credibility—combining perceived expertise and trustworthiness—increases persuasion. Audience characteristics moderate persuasion. Individuals high in need for cognition—who enjoy thinking—process centrally more readily. Prior attitudes matter—the more extreme, the harder to change. Age affects persuasion, with adolescence representing a particularly formative period for attitude formation. Education level influences which arguments prove persuasive.

Cognitive Dissonance

Cognitive dissonance, Leon Festinger’s influential theory, explains attitude change through internal consistency motivation. Dissonance is the uncomfortable psychological tension arising from holding contradictory cognitions, behaving inconsistently with attitudes, or making difficult decisions.

Festinger proposed that people are motivated to maintain internal consistency. Inconsistency creates uncomfortable psychological arousal—genuine discomfort people are motivated to reduce. This discomfort motivates attitude or behavior change to restore consistency. The stronger the inconsistency and the more important the cognitions, the greater the dissonance and motivation to reduce it.

Common examples include the smoker who knows smoking causes cancer—holding contradictory cognitions creates dissonance. Eating meat while loving animals produces discomfort from the inconsistency. Cheating while valuing honesty creates dissonance. Buying expensive items you cannot afford contradicts financial responsibility values. Any inconsistency between attitudes, or between attitudes and behavior, can generate dissonance.

Several strategies reduce dissonance. Changing attitudes to align with behavior—rationalization—proves most common when behavior cannot change. The smoker might minimize smoking’s dangers: “The research isn’t conclusive” or “My grandfather smoked and lived to 90.” Changing behavior to align with attitudes—actually quitting smoking—is harder but more authentic. Adding consonant cognitions introduces new beliefs reducing inconsistency without changing core attitude or behavior: “I exercise regularly, so smoking is offset” or “Smoking helps me manage stress.” Minimizing importance downplays inconsistency significance: “Everyone dies eventually, so why worry about smoking?”

Classic dissonance studies revealed counterintuitive findings. Forced compliance research showed insufficient justification effects—people who received small rewards for attitude-inconsistent behavior changed attitudes more than those receiving large rewards. When behavior can’t be justified by external rewards, internal justification (attitude change) occurs. Effort justification demonstrates that people value outcomes more after working hard for them—the effort creates dissonance with the outcome’s actual value, resolved by increasing perceived value. Post-decision dissonance shows that after choosing between alternatives, people increase preference for chosen options and decrease preference for rejected ones, reducing dissonance from giving up unchosen alternatives’ positive features. Hypocrisy induction interventions make people aware of inconsistencies between their stated attitudes and actual behavior, creating dissonance motivating behavior change.

The Attitude-Behavior Relationship

Early attitude researchers assumed attitudes directly predict behavior—that knowing someone’s attitudes allows predicting their actions. Decades of research revealed a much more complex relationship.

Attitudes predict behavior best under specific conditions. Strong, well-established attitudes predict better than weak ones. Accessible attitudes—those easily brought to mind—predict better than those requiring effort to recall. Specific attitudes toward particular behaviors predict better than general attitudes. Attitudes based on direct personal experience predict better than those formed indirectly. Low ambivalence—having few mixed feelings—improves prediction.

Situational factors also matter. Behavior occurs more consistently with attitudes when situational constraints are minimal.
